LOL! Do you seriously believe that capitalism doesn’t work? Look around you. You live in the most prosperous country mankind has ever seen. The average poor person in the united states has a place to live, a car, cable t.v., a radio and is overweight. Poor people 100 years ago were on the verge of starvation.
The world is lacking a lot of things, but the number 1 thing we are lacking is enough capitalism.
But what do I know, I only have a masters degree in economics.
I was asking a libertarian how he wanted to keep his free market free with no outside force if corporations where to make monopolistic cabals, I was trying to understand how his system accounted for that.
I am not a friend of corporatism or communism, whether a Boardroom Or a Central Planning Committee, they plan to steal from the working poor, whether to spite them for a profit margin or to “manage” the wealth for their own “good”.
“So the question is, how do we keep a free market free, without outside force?”
that is not even the real problem. what you should say is how does a free market = freedom. money is power and power is not freedom when it is in the hands of the few.
tell them to play the game bioshock and relax, capitalism will die away someday or we will.
thats not really true unless you are thinking of anacho-capitalist or some other ” SO CALLED” fringe ideology. i would believe in capitalism, if it worked.
if there is any one reason to not trust in the wisdom of capitalism is it age.
its old and old ideas are not as great as new ones.
Everything needs it context, So does this. While I agree with the speech, its premise doesnt extend beyond what it is related to. This speech is true, so long as you dont extend it to things it is not talking about. This speech is not about socialism, not about welfare, or deregulation. Its about business and technology and change and what do we do about it. I am a socialist and I love this speech, as a socialist
Just as it is a inherent problem with anarchist thinking, how can a free market stay free by itself? History teaches us that large-scale merchants form monopolies- from Venice to the various imperial stages *both colonial 1400-1700s and imperial 1800-1900s*.
So the question is, how do we keep a free market free, without outside force?
A great speech that highlights the importance of capital allocation. Limited resources need to be used in their most productive way (fiber optics vs. buggy whips) to advance the economy. The alternative is stagnation.
That is not to say that a reallocation of capital to a more productive endeavor doesn’t displace workers and create hardships — it does. The best way to combat this is an educated and highly flexible workforce that can quickly adapt to new industries and technologies.
Just ignore him. People who use labels to attack their opponents, are just using collectivist logic. He’s trying to write off all of your individual views by associating you with an entire group of people.
It’s too bad that modern day self-proclaimed “Liberals”, have tarnished the good word.
This is not a flaw in free-market, you are mistaken. Free-market simply means that ALL transactions done under the threat of violence, force and fraud are deemed illegal.
Secondly, the state forces individuals to become corporations before they can conduct trade for profit. This means, the biggest corps begin to see profit in paying lobbyists & politicians to push for regulations to restrict competition and raise the barriers to entry.
some of the most disturbing images of the future are mega-corporations having government level powers and owning private armies- history shows that mercenaries are a great evil- god forbid mercenary armies enforcing a profit margin, or a geographic monopoly.
That’s the inherent problem which the free market libertarianism- multi-national companies without reins- you have corporations without controls, they become new governments in there own rights.
The supreme court ruled that corporations can spend as much as they wish on campaign donations, you don’t even have to be an American corporation to donate!
Case in point: The Saudis owning the third largest part of Fox news with executive veto power on news reports.
@Foxlover666 You realize that unnecessary wars and corporate welfare are exactly the sort of things libertarians vehemently oppose?
If you want an idea of what real “pacifist anarchy” would look like, read John Locke. You mind find how similar you are to the very people you look down upon.
@foxsux6000 The car makers collapsed because their workers are in unions that carry a lot of political clout. See how well your company does when it’s basically illegal to fire your workers.
There wouldn’t be so much outsourcing if we had the trade barriers and tariffs that used to protect our national interests. If it wasn’t so easy for other countries to compete, we’d still have industry. I blame globalization for our crumbling economy.

@arminask
thank you,but i could have wrote it better.
well said: dont use shit out of context!
i know i was agreeing with you.
I didn’t say anything about capitalism.

Thank you for your civility, to start with.

State = Enforced, Market = Voluntary
I take offense at being called a liberal!
I for one, don’t support continuing wars I hated from just about the start because the new guy is a different party!
I’m most likely a nit wit though.
Fucking awesome speech by Mr. Devito. Hell yea!
“It is easy to be conspicuously ‘compassionate’ if others are being forced to pay the cost.” — Murray N. Rothbard
you are a liberal nit wit

@Foxlover666 That is something I would definitely agree with you on. I think a “hands off” economy only works if it works both ways.

Great speech!
lol at all the small government Libertarians not knowing that unfettered business will form the new tyranny.
Pacifist Anarchy is the only solution.
No more blood for the Military-Industrial Complex, no more Corporate Welfare.
The kingdom of God is within you.
